Data Breach at Premera Blue Cross Insurance Leads to Lawsuits

Medical records of more than 11 million people have been exposed due to a large-scale data breach at Premera Blue Cross Blue Shield Insurance.  Reports indicate that data stolen from Premera Blue Cross includes information about medical treatment, bank accounts, social security numbers, and other private and financial information that could expose victims to fraud and identity theft.  The Premera Blue Cross data breach occurred on May 5, 2014 but the company was not aware of the breach until January of 2015.  Victims of the Premera Data breach are filing lawsuits claiming that the health insurance giant knowingly operated with inadequate data systems that left confidential information exposed, and failed to provide notice of the breach until March of 2015, more than two months after the company discovered it.  If you or a loved one has been the victim of the Premera Blue Cross data breach, fill out the form below for a FREE consultation with an experienced attorney to see if you have a legal claim.

PREMERA BLUE CROSS FAILED TO ACT ON SECURITY WARNINGS

Three weeks before the May 2014 data breach, Premera Blue Cross received a warning from the U.S. Office of Personnel Management that its data security systems were inadequate.  Premera did not act on the warning until June 30th, 2014, leaving a gap between Premera receiving warning and having its system breached.  It is also unclear if Premera Blue Cross followed the data security recommendations after the breach occurred.

PREMERA BREACH TARGETS PACIFIC NORTHWEST

More than 6 million of the exposed customer accounts came from Premera Blue Cross insurance holders in Washington state, and includes many employees of Microsoft Corp, Amazon, and Starbucks.  Other accounts in jeopardy come from Alaska.  Premera Blue Cross customers who live in, or received treatment in, Washington or Alaska are at highest risk for having information stolen.
